What is Black Magic

“Black Magic” is a devalued term, and not because of any politically incorrect connotations – it is most often used to describe any magic that one happens to dislike, or any magic practised by someone whom you don’t like – even if the magic itself is (objectively speaking) quite benign.

That being said, for historical examples you might want to look up grimoire magic, i.e. rituals derived from classic spellbooks such as The Lesser Key of Solomon, or The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, both of which entail evoking Demons and compelling them to do one’s bidding

All spells are based on the intention of the caster. To give an example, say I wanted to create a talisman that would make me happier whenever I hold it. This talisman could be anything — it could be a crystal or a sachet of herbs that are associated with happiness (which would boost the power of my intention), or it could just be a sentimental object.

It could also be a sigil, a glyph that represents my desire for happiness. Whatever it is, in order to make it actually work, I have to to be able to imbue it with the energy of happiness. Witches often say “like attracts like,” and what they mean by that is, if you enchant this talisman so that it resonates with happy feelings, it will bring more happy feelings. To enchant it, you have to pour “happy” into the object. It’s a mental trick. You have to put your mind into the mental state of being as happy as possible and push that feeling into the object.

This is a lot easier said than done. It’s deceptively simple, but it can be so hard to conjure up a mental state or imagine a sensation that you want. I still haven’t figured out how to do it myself! Witches have all sorts of tricks for invoking mental states — using rituals to put themselves in the right mindset, surrounding themselves with evocative sensations, summoning spirits associated with the desire to give them a boost, meditation, etc.

Then, once you’re in the right mental state, you have to have the confidence, the belief, and the authority to force that energy into the talisman and be sure that it will work. The idea is that you only do all this work once, because after you succeed in enchanting the talisman with “happy” energy, all you have to do to feel happy is hold the talisman!
